How To “Go Ye” When Your Audience Is The Church

You’ve written a mission statement reflecting your calling. Your vision statement clearly reflects that calling to “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” But week after week, gig after gig your audience is composed of church folks who already know the Lord and have been baptized. So how do you fulfill that calling?

You get BEYOND the 4 WALLS of the church! Let’s make this simple: when was the last time you traveled outside your country to share the Gospel with the hurting and afflicted?

When I had the privilege of working with Integrity Music artist Paul Wilbur as his Administrator I also managed his tours both in the USA and abroad. Paul’s mission statement including reaching those hurting both spiritually and physically with the saving Gospel of Jesus. To do that we took his band, a medical team, a dance team, and an evangelistic team (and anyone else interested in going) to countries in Africa and Central America.

We set up medical missions at orphanages and local TV stations where our medical team provided basic medical support (immunizations, vitamins, pre-natal care, etc.) for those poorest in need.

Our evangelism team went out into the neighborhoods and downtown business districts openly witnessing to the lost and handing out flyers advertising the upcoming Gospel concerts. The dance team would give street-corner “flash mob” dance performances to advertise the medical clinics and upcoming concerts.

Every aspect of the tour was planned to evangelize the lost, heal the wounded (physically and spiritually), and encourage the saints. And we celebrated those victories at the end of the week with a free concert!

You don’t have to be a labeled artist with a big record company to “go ye!” You just need to have a calling and a desire to fulfill the Biblical mandate to go. Here’s how:

  1. Partner with other touring bands or artists to lead missions teams abroad.
  2. Hire an agency like TMA to facilitate your missions outreach.
  3. If your local church sends teams on missions trips this summer, go with them!

People everywhere want to be a part of something that’s bigger than themselves. When you include in your concerts testimonies of how those who were sick were healed, or how the unsaved came to Jesus in a foreign land, you are encouraging the believers in your audience. Remember, we overcome by “the word of our TESTIMONY and by the blood of the Lamb.”

You have fulfilled your calling; you are facilitating others’ desire to “go ye;” and you are encouraging those who cannot go to partner with you on some level.

Do not become myopic in your week-to-week concert ministry. The world needs the message God has given you and the church is already inundated with that message. It’s time to “go ye” and share that message abroad! Will you?
